The Science Behind If You Could Hear the Sun

Sound is a pressure wave — it needs atoms to bump into each other. Space is a near-perfect vacuum, so there's nothing to carry the vibration. But if space weren't empty, the Sun's convection layer would produce sound at about 100 decibels. That's roughly as loud as a chainsaw, sustained, 24/7. At Earth's distance, it would be closer to 125 decibels — loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage within seconds.

The Sun does vibrate, though. NASA's SOHO mission measures these helioseismology waves to study the Sun's interior, the same way geologists use earthquakes to map Earth's core. The Sun rings like a bell, with millions of overlapping vibration modes. The frequencies are way too low for humans to hear — around 0.003 Hz, compared to our hearing range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

Researchers at Stanford have sped up these vibrations to audible frequencies. The result sounds like a low, ominous hum — like a pipe organ in an empty cathedral. That's what the Sun would sound like if it could speak to us through the void.
