The Science Behind Neutron Star Spoon

A neutron star is what's left when a star 10-20 times the mass of our Sun runs out of fuel and collapses. Gravity crushes protons and electrons together into neutrons, packing them so tightly that a teaspoon of this material — about 5 milliliters — would weigh roughly 4 billion tons on Earth. That's about 2,700 blue whales, or 14 times the total weight of every human on the planet.

The surface gravity of a neutron star is about 200 billion times Earth's. If you dropped a marshmallow from one meter above its surface, it would hit with the energy of a nuclear bomb. The escape velocity is about half the speed of light. The magnetic field is a trillion times stronger than Earth's — strong enough to strip every atom from your body from 1,000 kilometers away.
